Start A Little Good Campaign
A Hindustan Unilever Limited and PLAN Foundation Initiative

Tackling Source Segregation in Urban India
Source segregation remains one of urban India's most persistent challenges, even as cities generate over 1.85 lakh tonnes of waste every day. Through Hindustan Unilever Limited's Start A Little Good campaign, PLAN worked directly with residential communities in Mumbai, training Safai Saathis, conducting door-to-door awareness sessions, and installing visual nudges to make segregation a daily habit. So far, over 13 thousand+ plus households have been engaged across three urban wards.

Impact at Scale
What began as a pilot with 4,000 households has now expanded to over 30,000+ households across three wards in Mumbai. Through the partnership between Hindustan Unilever Limited’s Start A Little Good campaign and PLAN Foundation, more than 60,000+ households across three urban wards in Mumbai have been covered under source segregation efforts.

The work on the ground is showing that when communities are engaged meaningfully, small everyday actions do add up.

I have been segregating waste for over 30 years and truly enjoy doing it. As a teacher, I also encourage my students to understand its importance and impact on the environment. While not everyone adopts the practice, I believe it is our responsibility to keep spreading awareness. Even at 70, I remain committed to creating a positive change.

Waste segregation must be followed by everyone, and as a society manager, I ensure residents understand its importance and comply with the rules. I truly appreciate this awareness campaign and the team’s approach. I’m happy to extend my support, not just within my society but in nearby communities as well.
